Common Misunderstandings

THERE ARE MANY MYTHS ABOUT DYSLEXIA. HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON — AND THE TRUTH BEHIND THEM:

MYTH FACT
Writing letters backwards means a child has dyslexia. Many young children reverse letters as they learn to write. Dyslexia is much more than that.
Reading disabilities are caused by vision problems. Dyslexia is about how the brain processes language, not about eyesight.
Children outgrow dyslexia if given enough time. Dyslexia is lifelong, but with the right support, children can learn to read and thrive.
Dyslexia only affects English speakers. Dyslexia exists in all languages, including Arabic.
Colored overlays or lenses can cure dyslexia. No scientific evidence supports this. Structured literacy programs are the proven method.
People with dyslexia can never learn to read. With proper instruction, people with dyslexia can become confident, capable readers.
